Remington - An American Legend
Remington is one of the greatest companies in America. Since 1816, Remington has been a leader in firearms, ammunition, targets, and many, many more industries.
The legend is that Remington’s founder, Eliphalet Remington II, believed he could build a better gun than he could buy. Eliphalet then set out to accomplish this task at his father’s forge in New York. In the fall of 1816, Eliphalet entered a shooting match with his handmade flintlock rifle, and as they say, the rest is history. He only finished second, but his gun was a hit and Remington was born. The company was originally named E. Remington & Sons.
Just a few of the companies achievements in the 1800’s are; developing the first hammerless solid breech repeating shotgun, the first hammer-less autoloading shotgun, the first successful high-powered slide action repeating rifle, and the first lock breach autoloading rifle. Not to mention, manufacturing type-writers, sewing machines, and cash registers, all in the USA.
Early in the 1900’s, Remington began making hunting knives, household utensils, and clothing.
In 1933, due to the great depression, Remington offered a controlling share to Dupont and on May 24th, Dupont acquired 60% of Remington. Dupont would become the sole owner of Remington later, and would own Remington until 1993.
Remington became the leader in trap and target equipment with their purchase of Chamberlin Trap & Target Company in 1934.
In 1940, the US government approached Remington to expand their production of ammunition through the construction of several new plants. The government wanted to build the plants and put Remington in charge of running the plants. A wise move with World War II fast approaching. I feel this says a lot about how important Remington was and still is to the United States.
The world’s best-selling pump action shotgun was introduced in 1950. The Model 870 “Wingmaster” took the shotgun world by storm and is still outperforming their competition. Shortly after, Remington introduced the first plastic body shotshells, I guess it didn’t hurt having DuPont backing the plastic research.
The sixties weren’t only good for hippies, as Remington introduced two of their most popular models, the Model 700 bolt-action rifle in 1962, and the Model 1100 autoloading shotgun (the father of my gun, the 11-87) in 1963. The 1100 took three years to develop.
24 years later Remington launched Model 11-87. The 11-87 was and improvement to the original 1100. The 11-87 could take up to a three inch shell when it came out and now they have models of the 11-87 that take up to 3 1/2 inch mags. Remington has produced over 52 different versions of the 11-87, but the 1100 has made a come back in the target shooting world. The real selling point is Remington’s patented pressure compensating gas system. The 11-87 is a workhorse. Reliability and low-recoil make it a pleasure to shoot, I’ve been shooting a 11-87 Premier for close to ten years.
As the 21st century came Remington didn’t slow down as they introduced the most significant advance in rifle and ammunition since the self-contained cartridge, the EtronX System. The EtronX is an electronic ignition system for centerfire rifles and ammunition.
The list of all Remington’s new products this decade would take two pages but here are some highlights; the MODEL 710, high performance rifle- low cost (2001), the introduction of ‘REM CHOKES’ (2002), a revamped gun safe line (2003), Model 1100 Competition released (2005), and Remington produces its first side by side models since 1910 with the Premier Side by Side line (2007).
I could go on and on about the history of this great American company. For 193 years, Remington has been on the cutting edge of the firearm industry and much more.
I’m proud to own a Remington and I’m proud to be an American. Come and take’em!
