Follow the 2010 Shot Show @ Browning.com

Filed under: Recent News — Tags: — admin @ 9:39 pm

Starting tomorrow, Browning will begin their coverage of the 2010 Shot Show. Not to mention, they are offering some pretty good deals.

There is no event that is more important for the hunting and shooting business than the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show). And it is huge, with over 707,000 square feet of exhibit space and 1,700 exhibitors. Over 1,400 media people will be there covering the show. The SHOT Show comes around once a year and next week is the big week. Just like last year, Browning will offer you blog updates of activities as well as details on product introductions at the Show along with video, articles and photos.

This year’s Show is in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is just a short hop for those of us living out West, working at the Browning headquarters in Morgan, Utah.

Last year the big worry was the direction of the economy. And although times have been very rough for many of you across the country, the mood leading up to this SHOT Show is very optimistic. 2009 was a pretty good year for the industry and we expect the mood to be very positive with many great new products from the best companies. As for Browning, you can expect more excitement, more fun and more great products than ever.

——————————————————————————-

As with last year, Browning’s special Web coverage of the Show will focus heavily on the new in-line products with extra attention given to the rarest of Browning products: the SHOT Show specials. These products — from every category in the Browning lineup — are offered to dealers only at the SHOT Show and usually manufactured in limited quantities. These are not only some of the most interesting and unique products made, but over the years they have proven to be some of the most collectable.

This year the SHOT Show runs from Tuesday, January 19 through Friday the 22nd. 2010 product is online right now, but expect SHOT Show specials to be available online by Tuesday. And, using the link on our home page, you can go to our running blog with extra details and observations from the Browning product managers. Since this is a trade show – not a consumer show – we hope to give you an insider look with our Web coverage.

Last year, with nearly 50,000 in total attendance and with its ranking as the 23rd largest trade show in the United States and Canada, it was truly an impressive gathering. Nearly 2,000 exhibitors are starting in the next few days to set up for the show.

To be a part of the excitement, simply go to browning.com starting Tuesday morning and we should be up and running with our first special reports. We’ll see you there.

When you visit Browning.com next week be sure to visit the SHOT Show blog section for updates, videos and details on new and special products.

——————————————————————————-

I’ll do my best to keep you posted on the specials that go on at the 2010 Shot Show.

The History Channel is Looking for 16 Top Shots

Filed under: Recent News — Tags: — admin @ 3:20 pm

This is right up my alley. Sixteen lucky contestants will battle weekly for a 100,000 dollar prize. The game, shooting. Each week they will be tested with different weaponry, with one elimination per week. So if you’re interested, scroll down and click on the link to get started. Check out the article from Field and Stream for more information.

Bourjaily: Are You America’s Top Shot?

Can you shoot? Are you in shape? Are you a character?

If you can answer “yes” to all three, you might be the contestant Pilgrim Productions is looking for to appear on the History Channel’s upcoming “America’s Top Shot.”

Pilgrim – producers of “Ultimate Fighter”, ”Dirty Jobs” and “Ghosthunter” – needs to cast 16 shooters. One will eliminated each week in a marksmanship challenge until the last man or woman standing claims the $100,000 prize. Because this is a History Channel show, weekly competitions could feature any projectile weapon ever made, from atlatls to assault rifles.

Pilgrim’s Semi Aboud – casting producer and fellow Lebanese-American – says: “The kind of person who will do well will be an expert in one type of shooting, but will be able to pick up other kinds quickly.”  In addition he says: “Contestants will have to be physically fit. Some of the challenges will involve running, climbing, and lifting heavy objects while shooting.”

Finally, Aboud notes, “You will need a big personality. I hesitate to use the word “character” but this is is TV after all and we want people who are interesting to watch and root for. You will have to be able to express yourself when interviewed about your feelings about the other contestants.”  Having read the comments to this blog, I have no doubt all of you are well-qualified in the “big personality” and “expressing feelings about others” departments.

Not all the details are final. You may shoot these events in historical costume. You may wind up living in a house with 15 other shooters during the filming. At any rate, it will be an adventure, and how cool would it be if a Gun Nut reader appeared on the show?

Application deadline is Jaunaury 18. Click here for your chance.

Hunter Shoots Himself Hoisting Gun

This has to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. A guy in New Hampshire decided to hoist his loaded 50 caliber muzzle loader (muzzle up appaently) anda branch pulled the trigger and shot him in the right hand. It just as easily could have been in the face.

The guy was 63 years old. I wonder how many times he has done this in the past. He’s lucky and hopefully if you have kids this will make you want to go out and teach them some more gun safety.

You can’t teach stupid, it just comes natural, but you can teach safety, safety, safety.

Here is the full storry.

‘Porn and Guns’ has GOP and Democrats Feuding

Filed under: Recent News — Tags: — admin @ 10:54 am

Bergen County Democrats have released the ‘Porn and Guns’ attack on the two Republicans running for office.

In a direct mail campaign the targets were Judith Fisher and NickLonzisero, both Repulicans running in the 38th district. Here is an excert:

”If you make your money on porn or guns, then you have something in common with the Bergen Republican candidates,” the front of the mailer reads.  Turn it around, and the flyer says that Republican Assembly candidate Judith Fisher is a “consultant to one of the largest pornographic companies in the world” and that her running mate, Ridgefield Councilman Nick Lonzisero, rents property to a gun shop located next to an elementary school that is promoted by the National Rifle Association - “the same organization that’s been lobbying to allow assault weapons in New Jersey.”

What the hell is wrong with porn and guns?  Frankly, two of the best things to enjoy in life, responsibily of course.

The Republicans are countering with a direct mailer of their own titled:

Taxpayers and Future Generations

” If you steal money from taxpayers and future generations, then you have something in common with these liberal bastards that demonize capitalism. Furthermore, if you want to give your money to the poor, pitiful people who are to lazy to get a job, you also have something in common  with them.”

Schwarzenegger a Rebublican????

I’m not sure how that can be? California is going bankrupt with all their “green” laws, and yet somehow they are the example our great president is trying to model our nation after.

Schwarzenegger was on a path early in his political career  to have the constitution changed so he could run for the presidency. However, he has lost his way with the ‘big tent’ platform. The big tent is what has caused conservatives to lose their way. Trying to fit the liberals under our tent has caused the republican party to overspend and has watered down our conservative values. Just refer to the 2008 elections, so many Rebublicans ran as middle of the road or moderate conservatives, and lost, including John McCain.

Earlier this week Schwarzenegger signed Assembly bill 962 into law that put strict rules on gun dealers in his state. I think the last thing a broke state should be doing is choking off gun and ammunition sales.

My fear is that what passes in California, will soon be in D.C. for a national vote.

Below is the full story:

This weekend, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) vetoed Senate Bill 585 but signed Assembly Bill 962 into law.

SB585 would have prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition on the property or inside the buildings that comprise the Cow Palace in Daly City, just outside of San Francisco. Simply put, SB585 was a stepping-stone to banning gun shows on all publicly-owned property in California.

Unfortunately, the Governor did sign AB962. This bill requires individuals purchasing ammunition be fingerprinted and registered at the time of sale, mandates that dealers keep these records and make them available for inspection by the California Department of Justice. Ammunition retailers would also have to store ammunition in such a manner that it would be inaccessible to purchasers. Finally, mail order ammunition sales are prohibited under AB962. Over twenty years ago, Congress abolished similar requirements because ammunition sales records were found to be useless for solving crimes. AB962 is a dire threat to our Second Amendment rights in the Golden State.

Thank you to all of the NRA members who answered the call in opposition to SB585.

Please contact Governor Schwarzenegger TODAY and respectfully voice your disapproval with his signing of AB962. The Governor can be reached by phone at 916-445-2841 or via fax at 916-558-3160. To email Governor Schwarzenegger, please visit

Headed for a Showdown

From the Houston Chronicle:

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to decide whether strict local and state gun control laws violate the Second Amendment, ensuring another high-profile battle over the rights of gun owners.

The court said it will review a lower court ruling that upheld a handgun ban in Chicago. Gun rights supporters challenged gun laws in Chicago and some suburbs immediately following the high court’s decision in June 2008 that struck down a handgun ban in the District of Columbia, a federal enclave.

The new case tests whether last year’s ruling applies as well to local and state laws.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld ordinances barring the ownership of handguns in most cases in Chicago and suburban Oak Park, Ill.

Judge Frank Easterbrook, an appointee of President Ronald Reagan, said that “the Constitution establishes a federal republic where local differences are to be cherished as elements of liberty rather than extirpated in order to produce a single, nationally applicable rule.”

“Federalism is an older and more deeply rooted tradition than is a right to carry any particular kind of weapon,” Easterbrook wrote.

Evaluating arguments over the extension of the Second Amendment is a job “for the justices rather than a court of appeals,” he said.

The high court took his suggestion Wednesday.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, then an appeals court judge, was part of a three-judge panel in New York that reached a similar conclusion in January.

Judges on both courts — Republican nominees in Chicago and Democratic nominees in New York — said only the Supreme Court could decide whether to extend last year’s ruling throughout the country. Many, but not all, of the constitutional protections in the Bill of Rights have been applied to cities and states.

The New York ruling also has been challenged, but the court did not act on it Wednesday. Sotomayor would have to sit out any case involving decisions she was part of on the appeals court. Although the issue is the same in the Chicago case, there is no ethical bar to her participation in its consideration by the Supreme Court.

Several Republican senators cited the Sotomayor gun ruling, as well as her reticence on the topic at her confirmation hearing, in explaining their decision to oppose her confirmation to the high court.

The case will be argued next year.

The case is McDonald v. Chicago, 08-1521.

Migratory Bird Report

North Zone Dove: Rain showers last week put a damper on the flight, however, between showers doves were good in corn, milo and along treelines. Fields near Paris enjoyed good shoots in harvested corn and soybeans. Amarillo fields of corn and milo hosted steady shoots. Abilene saw half-limits to near-limits of mourning doves. Hunters should expect a new flurry of birds this week with sustained north wind forecasted. Prospects are fair to good.

Central Zone Dove: Whitewing action picked up where it left off the first week of the season in San Antonio. An influx of birds in harvested corn just outside the city limits made for easy limits. Uvalde, San Saba, Waco, Sabinal, Del Rio and Hondo were the other hotspots around the state. Hunters there said they saw a new wave of birds ride in on the recent north wind. Sealy hunters continue to see plenty of whitewings around oak trees and milo on the outskirts of town. Harrison County hunters have taken half-limits in the afternoon. Katy, Hockley, Brookshire and Waller hunters saw a new crop of birds, but not enough to garner steady limits. Rain around the Houston area has limited the flight. Prospects are fair to good.

South Zone Dove: The season opens Sept. 18. Best hunts during the Special White-winged Dove Area season occurred around Harlingen and Brownsville. Corn, milo and wild sunflowers have seen the largest concentrations of birds. Some fields near Laredo saw slow hunting. Prospects look solid in Lytle, Uvalde, Del Rio and the Rio Grande Valley. Doves that have been shot out of Central Zone fields in Uvalde and Del Rio are staging just over the zone boundary in corn, milo and sunflowers. North winds this week should prompt more migrants to move south. Prospects are good.

Teal Season: Opening day of teal season on the coast was fair at best – not for lack of birds, though. Steady rains the week prior to the opener seemed to scatter birds. As is normally the case with puddle ducks like teal, many birds left the marshes when the heavy downpours occurred, heading to high ground. That made for slow hunts opening morning; however, by Sunday, birds began trickling back to the coastal marshes and hunters enjoyed better shoots. Good hunters were posted in Wharton County rice fields and leveed ponds. Eagle Lake hunters said they had to hunt later on opening day to get their birds, but Sunday shoots were much faster. Garwood hunters reported average hunting at best. Collegeport hunters said Sunday hunts were much better than opening day. Playa lakes in the Panhandle gave up good shoots. Water supplies there are in good shape from summer rains and recent rains have recharged playas. Hunters say the country is green from all the water. Prospects are good.

Here comes the SOUTH ZONE, HOOH RAH!

Waller County Complex, #2438, Public Land

Filed under: Dove Leases, Hunting Reviews, Recent News — Tags: , , — admin @ 7:20 pm

My dad, boys, and I hunted the Pattison road unit this drizzling Saturday morning. All I can say is get on the north end. There was a lot of shooting there, but also a lot of hunters too. So go early, if you go. We were out of position to start, but managed a decent shoot. For a lease two weeks into the Central Zone season, it was a good lease. The fact that upwards of 40 huntes came out tells me the pasture holds dove. We’ve hunted on this land before it was public and there were plenty of dove back then. Below is what a review will look like when you send me your reviews of other leases. Click on the link below to see a map of the property.

COMMENTS: We hunted the Waller public land today. If you go, get on the North end. The shooting was fabulous on that end. It was crowded, though. My sons had a blast and even with the inclement weather, it was a good time. The state should look at making this a quail pasture, I saw more quail than dove today.
